FRACTURED | KHMER PASSAGES by Thomas Buttery & Jai Rafferty
FRACTURED | KHMER PASSAGES is an installation that uses dance, music and interviews to explore questions of cultural identity, heritage and innovation in the fast-changing contexts of post-revolutionary Cambodia. The project is led by artists Jai Rafferty and Thomas Buttery in collaboration with Vanthy Khen, with music and sound remixing by Thomas E Price, and produced by Annie Jael Kwan.
After two years of independent exploration and community work in Cambodia, and inspired by the different generations of Khmer people they met, the artists found themselves asking some pertinent questions about Khmer cultural life.
How does the current generation deal with the loss inflicted during the Khmer Rouge? In what ways do they encounter their heritage? How can forms such as audio-visual arts be used to regenerate interest in or evolve heritage arts for a contemporary audience?
This investigation has seen them working in collaboration with the classical masters of traditional music and dance, visual artist Srey Bandaul, and choreographer Vanthy Khen.
Khmer Passages works with powerful, moving stories along with beautifully-shot material and recorded songs and music. With this rich source of material consisting of interviews, video footage, performance, photography and sound recordings, the artists create a number of works to explore the themes of memory, time and creativity.
This installation work was created with the support of multiple partners including SEA ArtsFest, Cambodian Living Arts, Amrita Performing Arts, Romeet Contemporary Art Space, Phare Ponleu Selpak, and the Singapore International Foundation. The installation is presented in partnership with the Asian Music Unit at Goldsmiths, University of London, and the video work, Site 2 – What Remains, is featured in the exhibition, “Hold Infinity in the Palm of Your Hand”.
