Abstract: The application of intermediality in European performance in the 21st century has refashioned our understanding of Shakespeare and theatre. Reflexive interrelationships between live and digital media on stage have resulted in new forms of dramaturgy, new spatial and temporal relationships, as well as new patterns of acting and spectating. Intermediality has been used to reflect on changing modes of cultural production, interaction, and transmission. Drawing on my recent book, "Intermedial Shakespeares on European Stages" (Palgrave 2014), the talk addresses the implications of intermediality for interpreting Shakespeare in a range of European contexts.
