Event overview
A talk by Landon Mackenzie, Professor of Art at Emily Carr University
Landon Mackenzie is a widely acclaimed Canadian artist who has developed an impressive body of work over the past thirty years. Her paintings are held in the collections of important art museums, including the National Gallery of Canada, Vancouver Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Ontario, Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal and Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, among others.
Mackenzie’s paintings evoke place, myth and patterns of memory, addressing the ways in which we situate ourselves in the world. Currently her display Emily Carr and Landon Mackenzie: Wood Chopper and the Monkey is at the Vancouver Art Gallery. It is a two-person exhibition in which works that span Mackenzie’s career are presented alongside a set of remarkable paintings by the iconic West Coast modernist Emily Carr (1871-1945) that Mackenzie has selected specifically for this exhibition.
On November 1st 2014, a rare solo show of paintings by Emily Carr opens at the Dulwich Picture Gallery. This London UK show will give audiences a chance to see many paintings of this important but isolated Canadian modernist artist.
Landon Mackenzie will give a slide lecture at Goldsmiths examining the two shows and speaking about her own work and her response to Carr.
Presented jointly by the Anthropology Department,
The Department of Art and
The Centre for Visual Anthropology
