Tales of the Unexpected: Ziya Azazi - Dervish in Progress
The Performance Research Forum is a meeting ground between contemporary practitioners, researchers, students and staff in the college as well as the general public via a programme of cutting edge talks, events and performances.
Curated and chaired by Professor Anna Furse, the next unmissable event is with Ziya Azazi.
Ziya Azazi was born in Turkey. From1986 to1991, he studied at the Mining Faculty in Istanbul Technical University, whilst also studying gymnastics. From 1990 to 1994, he created his first choreographic works in the State Theatre of Istanbul. Between 1994 to 1998 he worked with Tanz Atelier Sebastian Prantl (TAW), Tanz Hotel, and Willi Dorner. Following his solo performance, Unterwegs Tabula Rasa, in Vienna (1999), he was awarded a scholarship by Summer Dance Week Vienna and named “The Most Outstanding Dancer of the Year in Austria” by Ballet International Magazine.
Azazi started to explore the traditional dance of the Sufis in 1999. He created his solo performances from this as Work in Progress I (2001) and Work in Progress II (2003). Continuing his interest in traditional dances, he integrated experimentality and repetition with his own artistic and emotional orientation. His work Dervish, combined his two solo works, Dervish in Progress (2004) and Azab (2005).
While enriching the power of his solo dance with continuous research, Azazi has stayed in contact with different disciplines. He developed the project Icons (2007) in collaboration with the French musician Serge Adam. His questioning of the traditional and research into the nature of repetition and life cycles led him to add real fire in his solo dance which resulted in Ember (2010). His most recent work, Bolero (2014) integrates the repetition cycle in Ravel’s music with the aesthetics of his dance methodology.
The event takes place in the George Wood Theatre, Richard Hoggart Building, Goldsmiths, University of London, Lewisham Way, SE14 6NW, at 6.15pm.
Entrance free of charge, but booking is essential.
