Event overview
An NX Panel discussion with Matthew Herbert (Creative Director, NX & Accidental), Mike Gillespie (Artist Manager), Femme and another special guest, TBA
Major labels are no longer the only option. Independent artists and labels have more opportunity than ever to release music, gain attention and develop an audience. This does mean, though, that artists and labels have to find new ways of existing and breaking through the noise. How can an artist hope to make a living when they are expected to give away their music and play for free? Why would the music scene need yet another independent label?
NX Records is a collaboration between the Department of Music at Goldsmiths and Matthew Herbert’s Accidental Records. NX has a policy of insisting artists always own their own music, offer a 50/50 profit split and ongoing creative development and advice for artists. It has run projects such as a pop up record shop and professional development/ industry workshops and has a number of well-received releases to its name.
Despite being attached to a university, NX Records is a professional label and exists alongside and in competition with other independent labels.
This discussion hopes grapple with issues relating to the changing face of the music industry, new models of practice for artists and labels, getting started in the industry, NX’s role and agency in this...
We will be joined by the NX core team, including co-founder and creative director Matthew Herbert, manager Mike Gillespie (Matthew Herbert, Underworld, Bitter Ruin, These Ghosts) and Laura Bettinson (Femme) as well as another very special guest to be announced, to open up the discussion and hear from artists who aren’t directly involved in the label as well.
All welcome.
