With Anthony Coleman, Charles Hayward, Bass Clef and Ashley Paul/Michael Speers
This event is supported by The Contemporary Music Research Unit and the Popular Music Research Unit.
ARTIST BIOS:
Anthony Coleman - Composer/Pianist (New England Conservatory). Recent activity has included a commission for the Parisian Ensemble Erik Satie; tours of Japan and Europe with guitarist Marc Ribot’s band Los Cubanos Postizos; an artist’s residency in Venice, and a commission from the String Orchestra of Brooklyn.
Charles Hayward - Drummer/Improvisor. Founder member of the experimental rock group This Heat, also of Camberwell Now and Monkey Puzzle Trio fame. Throughout the 1990's until the present day he has initiated a bewildering array of events, performances and projects, including group and solo work, often centred around our immediate locale in SE London.
Bass Clef - Electronics/Trombone. Ralph Cumbers aka Bass Clef is a dance artist who criss-crosses boundaries making friends where ever he goes, armed with his trombone, effects, and percussive instruments of choice he is a potent mix of dance(hall) inspirations – 21st Century urban roots music, Caribbean rhythms, pulsating techno, hypnotic brass, machine soul and classic ‘hands in the air’ rave dynamics which all swirl around the Bass Clef sound-system experience.
Ashley Paul - Voice/Sax/Guitar. Ashley Paul is an American performer and composer based in London. She uses an array of instruments including saxophone, clarinet, voice, guitar, bells and percussion, mixing disparate elements to create a colorful palate of sound that works its way into her intuitive songs; free forming, introverted melodies. This blend manifests beautiful and simple musical forms against acoustic experimentation.
Michael Speers - Percussion/Tape/Feedback. Michael Speers is a musician currently based in London. Using feedback as the basis for most of his practice, he performs live with amplified percussion, tape loops and no-input mixer.
