Event overview
Goldsmiths honours BB King's work in prison eduction by showing 'Live in Sing Sing' (1972)
As tributes pour in about the legendary blues guitarist BB King Goldsmiths foregrounds the important work he did as a prison reformer. On Tuesday 20th May a screening of Live at Sing Sing will take place at Goldsmiths at 6.30pm (PSH LG01) with an introduction by Professor Les Back.
Professor Back commented: "BB played many times in prisons - always for free including Cook County Jail and of course Sing Sing. There is something about these performances that capture his voice - as both a guitarist and a blues singer - at its very best." The influential blues musician called "Live at Sing Sing" his "greatest performance".
The film documents prison life and the cultural programmes rehabilitation that were still in operation in American prisons in the 1970s. It also features performances by Joan Baez and the Sounds of East Harlem. Professor Back concluded: "It's an appropriate way to honour BB King's legacy but also to remember that today prisoners are facing worsening conditions. It remains difficult to even send a book to a prisoner and it would be unthinkable for concerts like this one to take place in the US or the UK today."
