Students Sam Gillies, Francesca Ter-Berg and Rodrigo Camacho discuss their work.
The MRS will be having three short presentations from a number of BMus and MMus students. These presentations will focus on the research, work and practice of Sam Gillies, Francesca Ter-Berg & Rodrigo Camacho. This will be a really enjoyable session and a great opportunity to hear about the work of current students working towards completing their BMus and MMus courses.
Rodrigo B. Camacho – ‘The Wolf Game and the NME’
Rodrigo B. Camacho is a Portuguese composer and performance art designer based both in London, UK. His Works range from acoustic instrumental and vocal chamber music to interdisciplinary pieces for dance, theatre, performance and sonic conceptual art. In Portugal he studied composition with Francisco Monteiro and performance art and improvisation with Né Barros at the College of Education, Porto. From 2012 he studied composition with Roger Redgate and Alistair Zaldua at Goldsmiths, University of London. In 2013 was the winner of the 4th British Composer Awards with “No. 46 - AMERICAN CANDY – “What the hell is yellow no. 6?!?”.
He is with Milena Mateus the co-founder of the NME (new music Ensemble), London, UK, and of CNE (Câmara Nova Ensemble), Funchal/Lisbon, Portugal, two contemporary music groups for which, within a creative collective of composers, visual artists and performance designers he works regularly.
Sam Gillies - 'Emanations'
Sam Gillies is a composer and sound artist with an interest in the function of noise as both a musical and communicative code in music and art. His work treads the line between the musically beautiful and ugly, embracing live performance, multimedia and installation art forms to create alternating sound worlds of extreme fragility and overwhelming density. Sam’s music has been programmed at both national and international conferences and festivals, including the Test Tone Series at Superdeluxe, Tokyo and the International Computer Music Conference. Sam is currently studying a Masters in Composition at Goldsmiths, University of London.
Francesca Ter-Berg - ‘ On Recent Work and Practice’
Francesca is a cellist specialising in klezmer and gypsy music, which she has studied with internationally renowned musicians and teachers, most recently the legendary Manouche maestro Tcha Limberger. She performs with acclaimed folk singers Sam Lee and Katy Carr and has recently collaborated with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Mercury Award Winner Talvin Singh. Francesca teaches klezmer for the Jewish Music Institute at the School of Oriental and African Studies, and frequently hosts world music shows live on Resonance 104.4FM.
As per usual there will be time for wine and discussion afterwards.
The Music Research Series is designed to help postgraduate students advance their research and careers. The events stimulate exchange, hones skills, facilitates the creation of professional networks and helps to consolidate the department’s postgraduate community. Attendance is strongly recommended for all postgraduate students (MA, MMus and PGR) in Music but of course undergraduates, music researchers, and visitors from across the college and the community are also most welcome to these public lectures.
