Event overview
PhD student and cellist Rebecca Turner discusses ‘Hearing Voices' (2011) for solo cello and electronics, by Michael Cryne
This paper will address contemporary repertoire for the cello, the use of extended techniques on the instrument and the influence of electronics on instrumental technique. As per usual there will be time for wine and discussion afterward.
Equally at home performing in the concert hall or in a bar, Rebecca is a regular performer around London, North America and New Zealand. Rebecca has participated in numerous recording projects and gigs, ranging from classical symphonies, concerti and requiems, to film recordings and collaborations with a variety of artists. The New Zealand artist’s international studies began in 2001, when she was awarded a scholarship to study under Professor Mihaly Virizlay towards a Master of Music degree at the Peabody Conservatory of Music. In 2003, Rebecca spent some time in Singapore, taking up a fellowship she was awarded to study at the University of Singapore and playing as a guest with the Singapore Symphony. Rebecca’s journeys took her to London in 2004, when she was given the opportunity to study with world renowned cellist and pedagogue, Natalia Pavlutskaya. Inspired by twenty-first century repertoire, the up-and-coming cellist’s next move was to Toronto, where she spent a year under the tutelage of outstanding contemporary soloist and virtuoso, Shauna Rolston. Currently, Rebecca is residing in London where she is enjoying collaborating with a variety of artists and exploring cultural and musical forms, both inside and outside the Western classical tradition.
The Music Research Series is designed to help postgraduate students advance their research and careers. The events stimulate exchange, hones skills, facilitates the creation of professional networks and helps to consolidate the department’s postgraduate community. Attendance is strongly recommended for all postgraduate students (MA, MMus and PGR) in Music but of course undergraduates, music researchers, and visitors from across the college and the community are also most welcome to these public lectures.
