'English in the 21st Century', Professor Jennifer Jenkins Chair of Global Englishes at the University of Southampton, founding Director of the University's Centre for Global Englishes.
The English language has changed dramatically since its beginnings around 1500 years ago. Alongside changes in the language there has also, in more recent centuries, been a strong ‘complaint’ tradition, with each linguistic change seen as a sign of decline not only in English itself, but also in morality. The 21st century is proving no exception to any of this, not least because of its recently accelerated global spread, leading to its current position as the world’s main international lingua franca, and the resulting influence on English of its non-native speakers.
