Event overview
Professor David Treuer, Richard Hoggart Lecture in Literature and Culture, 'Writing Culture'.
'Writing is as much about habit as it is about the imagination. As such, all of our narratives (whether fiction or nonfiction) are related, beholden, and in some ways subservient to all the narratives that have come before us. So how do we find our way out of the maze of received thought and into a place where we can craft new narratives and see things differently? Treuer will discuss these and other issues in relation to his latest books of fiction and nonfiction: Prudence and Rez Life.'
Treuer is Ojibwe from Leech Lake Reservation in northern Minnesota. He holds an A.B. from Princeton University and his PhD in anthropology from the University of Michigan. He is the author of four novels and two books of nonfiction. His most recent novel is Prudence, published in 2014. He is the winner of numerous awards and fellowships from the NEA, Guggenheim Foundation, and received the Pushcart Prize. He is a professor of English at the University of Southern California.
