"Navigating the wide open field"
This short presentation blends performance, playback and commentary on his work since 2010. Crucial to Matt's work is the sense of collaboration in many different areas of music making and the constant juggling of many projects at the same time. This approach to making work is not so different from his performances with turntables, where disparate sonic fragments are deliberately fractured, reassembled and made to speak to each other. Rather than being a score-based composer influenced by electronic music, or an electronic musician who works with live performers, Matt's hope is that his work draws equally on the critical interchange between notation, improvisation and technology.
Matt is a Professor of Composition and Sonic Art at Canterbury Christ Church University, where he is also the Director of Research for the School of Music and Performing Arts.
As a performer and researcher he works with turntables, laptops and surround sound installations to create post-DJ, multichannel music that embraces hip hop, avant garde and 'free' traditions.
This event is free and open to all.
