The Contemporary Relationship of Music to Philosophy
This talk will address the issues that arise from the recent growth of interest in the relationship between music and philosophy, especially the tension between using philosophy to try to understand music, and my own stance that we may sometimes learn more about philosophy via music than vice versa. If one's priority in this area is how to make sense of things, music demonstrably does this more effectively in certain respects than does philosophy.
Professor Bowie's research is concerned with core issues in modern philosophy, particularly those explored by the German tradition from Kant to the present. He does not see the philosophical issues in question as separable from other key cultural responses to the problems of the modern world, and has written extensively about music and literature as well as philosophy. Professor Bowie has a long-standing concern with mediating between the European and analytical traditions of philosophy. His next book is on Aesthetic Dimensions of Modern Philosophy.
This event is free and open to all.
