Event overview
Department of Art Public Talks Programme Spring 2016 welcomes artist Anthea Hamilton to Goldsmiths.
Contemporary Art Talks: Anthea Hamilton
Anthea Hamilton’s art oscillates between kitsch and the sublime, sculpture and installation, theatre set and performance. She describes her works as “performative sculptures”; their tinge of theatricality is prompted by their spatialisation and a skilful juxtaposition of ambiences, surprise effects, masks and simulacra. Her bold sculptural assemblages often feature oversized cut-outs of eclectic photographic images, from pasta to pop-cultural icons. Avant-garde design, niche products, fandom, and expertise inspire Hamilton's work. Verging on the absurd, the works articulate perverse fantasies, intimately binding the body to products and things.
Anthea Hamilton recent solo exhibitions include Sculpture Center, New York, 2015; Tate Britain, 2014; Bloomberg Space, 2013; Firstsite in Colchester; Tanks at Tate Modern, London, both 2012; Chisenhale, London; Kunstverien Freiburg, both 2009. Group exhibitions include Don't You Know Who I Am – Art After Identity Politics at MuKHA, Antwerp; 10th Gwangju Biennale; Glasgow International, all 2014; and Better Homesat Sculpture Center, New York, 2013; 13th Lyon Biennale, 2015. Her work is currently on show in the touring exhibition British Art Show 8. Hamilton was born 1978 in London, where she lives and works. She studied at Leeds Metropolitan University and the Royal College of Art, London.
