Event overview
Who is to blame for catastrophic climate change?
Everywhere, we are being told that we live in a new geological epoch, that of the human species: ‘the Anthropocene’. So how did we end up here? Who brought us into this ever-hotter and less predictable place – humankind itself, our ancestors, our species being? And who is still, in spite of everything we know about climate change, pouring fuel on the fires of business-as-usual? This conversation will address some of the issues of causality and responsibility in current debates around the Anthropocene, as well as various efforts from within social theory to understand the escalating interpenetration of nature and society in a warming world. Surviving this epoch will require an accurate picture of the enemy: join us in discussing who he is and how to unseat him.
Andreas Malm teaches human ecology at Lund University. He is the author of Fossil Capital: The Rise of Steam Power and the Roots of Global Warming, just out from Verso. He will be in conversation with Alberto Toscano, Reader in Critical Theory and co-director of the Unit for Global Justice and the Centre for Philosophy and Critical Thought.
All welcome. No need to book.
