Event overview
This lecture-recital is dedicated to the centenary of Grigori Frid and the release of the Toccata Classics CD.
The Russian composer, artist and writer Grigori Frid (1915–2012), whose long life encompassed the entire existence of the Soviet Union, is best known for his chamber operas 'The Diary of Anne Frank', 1969, and 'The Letters of Van Gogh', 1975, which deservedly received their international recognition.
Frid’s sizable output, which has yet to be properly explored, includes three major works for viola and piano, their dignified restraint and emotional honesty taking the late works of Shostakovich as their stylistic starting point.
Programme:
Sonata ‘Phaedra’ for Viola and Piano No. 2, op. 78, 1985, is followed by 'In Memoriam Grigori Frid', 2014, a touching tribute by Alexander Vustin (b. 1943) to his former teacher.
