Academic Language Development Courses for International/EU Students

Students who use English as an Additional Language, such as international and EU students, can come to weekly-run courses at CALL. These Academic Language Development courses focus on the style, language and grammar of English academic practices. They are specifically designed for different areas of study, such as Media, Social Work, etc. (See the list below). They can support students to produce the specific course work required by their programme: written assignments, in particular.

 

Academic Language Development courses vary from year to year, but will include:

Here are more courses that International and EU students can attend:

  • Writing is Where We Can Surprise Ourselves: This four-week personal writing course is open to all International and EU students. It supports students to develop confidence, courage and curiosity. It runs in Autumn and Spring Terms
  • Starting to Write: This two-day course is open to all First-Year International and EU Undergraduate students. It takes place at the end of the Autumn Term and supports students to manage their holiday assignments
  • Postgraduate One-Day Essay-Writing Course: This one-day course is open to all International and EU Postgraduate Masters students. It takes place at the end of Autumn Term and supports students to write long, Masters-level essays

Academic Literacies Courses for All Students:

  • Decolonising Research Methods: This ten-week course is for all students. The focus is on deconstructing the colonial foundations of Western academic research and developing decolonising perspectives and approaches. It runs in Spring term with follow-up sessions focused on dissertation research strategies
  • Postgraduate Academic Writing: This five-week academic writing course is open to all Postgraduate Masters students.  It supports students to write research, argumentative essays at Masters-level. It runs in Autumn and Spring Terms
  • Postgraduate Dissertation Research Methods: This eight-week course is open to all Postgraduate students. The focus is on developing research skills for MA dissertations. It runs in the Summer Term
  • Postgraduate Dissertation Writing: This seven-week course is open to all Postgraduate students. The focus is on structuring and writing MA dissertations. It runs in the Summer Term
  • Entrepreneurial Modelling Business Plan Writing: This five-week course is for all students taking this popular interdisciplinary module. It runs in the Spring term

Embedded Academic Literacies Workshops

Embedded Academic Literacies workshops are for all students that are arranged with programme and module convenors and timetabled within degree programmes. They support students to participate in the academic practices specific to their discipline, particularly preparing researched essays and writing assignments. However, they also include support for specific practices, e.g. preparing presentations for an academic symposium.
