3. Heads of Academic Department
3.1
The Head or Acting Head of an Academic Department shall be appointed by the Council on the nomination of the Warden, following the operation of procedures specified by Council, and shall be responsible to the Warden for the efficient operation of his or her department and for its observance of the College Charter and Statutes and Ordinances and of the Statutes, Ordinances and Regulations of the University so far as they apply to the department, and for College-wide Regulations relating to examinations, student progress, quality assurance, finance, staff, and any other which may be specified by the Council or the Academic Board so far as they apply to the department; and to take responsibility in cooperation with the appropriate officers of the College for the compliance of the department with all relevant legislation, and the College regulations designed to implement them.
3.2
The responsibilities of the Head or Acting Head of an Academic Department shall include the following:
3.2.1
To prepare annual departmental estimates, to authorise expenditure on departmental equipment, other non-pay items, and hourly paid staffing, within agreed limits, and to advise on and formulate plans for future needs
3.2.2
To take all appropriate measures to meet intake targets approved for the department.
3.2.3
To serve on Academic Board
3.2.4
To serve on selection committees for the appointment of staff, and on such other committees as may be prescribed
3.2.5
To chair the Departmental Board
3.2.6
To recommend the selection of students for programmes of study
3.2.7
To advise students on course choices available within programmes of study
3.2.8
To designate Personal Tutors from amongst the staff of the department and to allocate students to them
3.2.9
To designate a Departmental Senior Tutor and other departmental offices, including those relating to research, learning and teaching and admissions, and to allocate appropriate duties to them
3.2.10
To encourage and report on research work within the department and to advise the College on research priorities
3.2.11
To monitor the academic progress of students on programmes of study in the department and to make appropriate recommendations
3.2.12
To oversee the operation of the College's staff Performance and Development Review scheme in respect of staff of the department and to ensure the efficient working of the schemes within the department
3.2.13
To undertake such training as may be prescribed by the College to enable him or her to efficiently undertake the duties associated with the post of Head or Acting Head of an Academic Department
3.2.14
To ensure that, in the absence of the Head or Acting Head of Department (for example, on leave), due provision is made for the discharge of the above duties and that the Warden has been notified accordingly
3.2.15
Following consultation with the Departmental Board and with other Heads or Acting Heads as appropriate to advise upon the content and validation of programmes of study
3.2.16
Following consultation with the Departmental Board to advise upon the accommodation, resources and staffing needed for the proper conduct of programmes of study within the department
3.2.17
Following consultation with the Departmental Board to oversee curriculum development, the conduct of programmes of study mounted by the department, and all teaching quality assurance issues relating to those programmes
3.2.18
Following consultation with the Departmental Board to seek, where appropriate, research grants and other forms of external financial support for departmental activities
3.2.19
Following consultation with the Departmental Board to draw up a departmental timetable of courses within programmes of study.
3.3
The Council after consultation with the Academic Board shall determine how any variations in Heads of Departments' responsibilities shall apply to the Heads of Academic Areas given the special circumstances of the areas.
