Charles Hayward

Primary page content

Charles Hayward is a drummer, songwriter and sound activist, who was made an honorary fellow of Goldsmiths in 2023.

Charles Hayward was a founding member of the experimental rock groups This Heat and Camberwell Now.

Since the late 1980’s Hayward has recorded solo projects of songs and imaginative sound worlds, performing throughout UK, Europe, North America and Japan. He also collaborates, most notably in Massacre with Bill Laswell and Fred Frith and with Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor in About Group and Albert Newton with Pat Thomas and John Edwards. The project This Is Not This Heat has recently completed a 3 year series of performances in UK, Europe, US and Japan.

Throughout a nearly 50 year career Charles has developed idiosyncratic attitudes and insights into a wide range of soundwork, spanning improvisation, song, sound as sound, using order and chaos as creative energies.

He curates Music Is Social Space, a six monthly series of performances, workshops and installations for the Albany Theatre. Recent releases include the piano centred song cycle ‘Begin Anywhere’ on Klanggalerie & God Unknown Records. Never at rest, he has recently formed a new group, Abstract Concrete and their new album is near to release.

Charles’ music is both innovative and communicative, intense and committed - music that pushes at the edges of the new, challenging the already known, questioning frontiers and embracing divergent energies.

Edward Enninful OBE

Primary page content

British Vogue editor-in-chief, Edward Enninful OBE, was awarded an honorary fellowship from Goldsmiths in 2018.

The appointment of Edward Enninful as editor-in-chief of British Vogue was a moment of celebration for Black Britain.

He was briefly a student at Goldsmiths before being appointed i-D magazine’s youngest-ever fashion director at the age of just 18 - a role he held for two decades. From here, the stylist’s rise was meteoric with campaigns for Versace, Gucci, Christian Dior and many others.

Enninful’s trailblazing work on Italian Vogue, since 1998, American Vogue, since 2006, and W Magazine, since 2011, led to his appointment at British Vogue in 2017 – where he has continued to innovate and inspire.

Since his appointment, the magazine has featured British mixed-race model and feminist activist Adwoa Aboah alongside the likes of Beyoncé, Oprah Winfrey, Rihanna, Judi Dench, Madonna and soccer player Marcus Rashford. The September 2019 edition, guest-edited by Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, featured 15 female changemakers and was British Vogue’s fastest-selling in its 104-year history.

In 2014, Enninful was named fashion creator of the year by the British Fashion Council, he was honoured with an OBE in 2016 for Services to Diversity in the Fashion industry, and in 2018 he was awarded the Media Award by the Council of Fashion Designers America. In 2019, Enninful was honored by The Daily Front Row for Magazine of the Year and listed as one of the Evening Standard’s top 20 most influential Londoners of 2019.
