Changing your password

How to change your password and update it on your devices.

Primary page content

As well as changing your password you will need to update it in places where it is stored. This will include Wi-Fi settings on your devices.

It is best to set aside 5-10 minutes when you can focus on doing this. Have all the devices you use to hand.

For security purposes, if you wish to change your password again you will need to wait 24 hours. Please contact IT Service Support for more information.

This page is for Mac users not plugged in by cable to the Goldsmiths network.
See instructions for other setups.

Step 1: Change your password

Go to any service that uses the Microsoft sign-in. For example: outlook.com/gold.ac.uk

Enter your username in the format abcde001@campus.goldsmiths.ac.uk and instead of entering a password click 'Forgotten my password'.

Enter the characters as seen in the picture and then click 'next'.

Select the 'I’ve forgotten my password' option and click 'next'.

Depending on the authentication methods that have been configured for your account, you will have one or more of the following options to confirm your identity. Follow the instructions on the screen for your chosen method. The image below is for the Microsoft authenticator app:

You will be asked to choose a new password on the next screen.

Your new password must:

  • Be between 12 and 100 characters long
  • Contain upper and lower case letters
  • Contain numbers
  • Contain special characters eg ! $ # % @ +
  • Not contain any of these characters: “ < > ‘ & £
  • Not contain part of your name or surname
  • Not contain part of your username
  • Not reuse a previous password

On the Confirmation page of password reset, click on the click here link to return to sign in screen.

After you change your password, you may lose access to eduroam until you update your Wi-Fi password.

Your Mac should prompt you to enter your new password. Alternatively, you can:

  • Go to System Preferences > Network, make sure Wi-Fi is selected
  • Click on Advanced, you should now have a list of known networks, scroll until you find eduroam, select it and click on the '-' (minus) sign at the bottom of the list
  • Click on Ok > Apply
  • Select eduroam in the drop-down under Network Name
  • Enter your in the username field and then your new password

The password you are asked for when you switch on and login to your Mac is held within your machine and doesn't use the Goldsmiths one.

You can either set this to be the same as your Goldsmiths password to use a different one.

To change it:

Go to System Preferences > Users and Groups

On the left-hand side select your name (it should already be selected) and then Change Password...

Please log out and back into your Mac.

If you get prompted by Keychain to enter your password, enter your old password as Keychain is asking you to 'approve' the password change.

If the new password is entered, in some cases Keychain keeps popping up without ever accepting the new password.

Step 2: Campus Wi-Fi (eduroam)

You will only be able to do this on campus where you can connect to eduroam.

If you are using a Mac you should be prompted to enter your new password.

Your mobile device should prompt you for your new password. Alternatively you can:

  • Go to Settings > Wi-Fi
  • Click on the circled 'i' icon next to eduroam > click on Forget This Network
  • Select eduroam on the list of available networks
  • When prompted, enter username@campus.goldsmiths.ac.uk and your new password
  • When prompted to trust the certificates, select Trust

Your mobile device should prompt you for your new password. Alternatively, you can:

  • Tap Settings > Wi-Fi
  • Hold your finger on eduroam and click Forget
  • Choose eduroam from the list of available networks
  • Enter the following settings:
    • Under EAP Method select PEAP
    • Under Phase 2 Authentication select MSCHAPV2
    • If you have a Samsung device, under Certificates select Do not validate
    • Under Identity enter username@campus.goldsmiths.ac.uk
    • Under Anonymous Identity enter anonymous@gold.ac.uk (this is not compulsory, but some newer Android versions require it, so it’s good practice to enter it)
    • Under Password enter your campus password
            • Tap on Connect

Your device should prompt you to enter your new password. You may need to forget the network and set it up again according to the device specifications.

Step 3: Email and other apps on other devices

IT & IS only supports the Outlook email app and not the ones provided with iOS and Android devices.

Webmail and Webapps in your browser

If you access email through your device's browser (Chrome, Safari) and you have your password saved, click on the menu on the top left corner, scroll to the bottom and click on Sign out.

Then log back in typing your new password, your device should prompt you to save the new password.

            Apps

The Outlook and other Microsoft apps should prompt you for your new password.

To ensure everything in the App will work, logout and back in again:

            iOS

Click Settings at the bottom of the screen. Scroll to the bottom and click Logout.

Select the correct profile for you and login.

            Android

Click the three dots on the top right of the screen and select Settings.

Click the key icon on the top right to logout.

Select the correct profile for you and login.

            Step 4: Browsers

If you save your passwords on Chrome, please be mindful that you changed your password next time to log into a Goldsmiths service.

Make sure you manually type it and, if asked, save the new password.

If you want to actively reset your passwords:

            • Click on the three dots on the top right corner (menu) and select Settings
            • Under Autofill > Passwords delete any password related to a Goldsmiths service. You will not have your passwords saved next time you visit one of our websites.

Make sure you manually type it and, if asked, save the new password.

            • Under the Passwords tab (you might need to enter your laptop password) remove any Goldsmiths related entry. You will not have your passwords saved next time you visit one of our websites.

If you save your passwords on Firefox, please be mindful that you changed your password next time to log into a Goldsmiths service.

Make sure you manually type it and, if asked, save the new password.

If you want to actively reset your passwords:

            • Click on the three lines on the top right corner (menu) and select Options
            • Under Privacy & Security > Forms & Passwords click on the Saved logins button and remove any Goldsmiths related entry. You will not have your passwords saved next time you visit one of our websites

Step 5: Mac apps and settings

Your printer(s) is set up to authenticate against your Goldsmiths IT username and password. You can only change the password after you send something to print.

After sending something to print, your Mac’s Print Manager will appear in the doc.  Open it, and you will see an error saying Hold for authentication.

Click the icon on the right-hand side that looks like a refresh button (a curved, circular arrow), and it should prompt you to re-enter your password. Make sure you tick Remember my credentials before submitting your new password.

You will have to do this for each printer you have set up. Staff in the Caroline Graveson Building will need to do both the Staff Colour Pull Queue and Staff Mono Pull Queue.

Outlook will prompt you for your new password next time you logon. Make sure you manually type your password and tick Remember my credentials.

If you use Webmail (outlook.office.com), you should be prompted to update your password. Alternatively, click on your initials on the top right corner and select Sign out, then sign in again typing your new password.

This page covers the main systems that use your password.

If you have any problems contact the IT Service Desk.

The following systems have their own username and passwords. They will not be affected by this change:

            • My Goldsmiths
            • Unit-E/Columbus/Student Records System
            • Adobe Creative Cloud
