Journalists from Goldsmiths, University of London are guaranteed to scoop two prestigious awards because they are the only nominees in their categories.
MA Radio alumni Marta Malagon and Jaqueline Shoen and undergraduate radio student Sera Baker make up the entire shortlist for the Best Radio Feature and Best Radio Documentary categories of the BJTC Student Journalism awards 2015.
Jaqueline features twice – in the Best Radio Documentary category for “What’s Cookin’ In the Burger Lab” and Best Radio News Feature strand for “Wrestling the Croc”.
Sera is nominated for her piece “Radio Gaga” for Best Radio News Feature while Marta is in the running for Best Radio Documentary with “Revolution is a She”.
All the work can be heard on the website of the Broadcast Journalism Training Council. The winners will be announced at a ceremony held at ITV Southbank on 25 November 2015.
Head of Radio Professor Tim Crook said: “The BJTC awards jury are making something of a statement.
They have only short-listed Goldsmiths students for these two categories – meaning that Goldsmiths has won in both categories.
Judges chose the shortlist from 3,500 entries submitted by students studying on the 68 BJTC accredited industry-backed courses in the UK.
Commenting on all the nominations Jon Godel, BJTC Chief Executive, said: “Our industry judges were very impressed with the standard of the entries, commenting they had found some journalism stars of the future.”
The nominations follow a string of successes for the Department of Media and Communications – and come hot on the heels of two award nominations earlier this week.
MA Digital Journalism alumni David Blood and Kara Fox are both up for multimedia journalist of the year at the Guardian’s Student Media Awards 2015.
Last month saw two editorial teams from the MA Journalism course come first and second in the BBC Worldwide Best Student Magazine of 2015 category at the Magazine Academy Awards.
And last year three Media and Communications alumni triumphed at the BJTC Student Journalism Awards.
