Adam Curtis speaking at Goldsmiths
Adam Curtis is an acclaimed documentary filmmaker known for works including Bitter Lake (2015), HyperNormalisation (2016) and The Century of the Self (2002). He has also collaborated with the immersive theatre company Punchdrunk and the band Massive Attack.
Speaking to a full lecture theatre, Adam Curtis was interviewed by Associate Lecturer Leah Borromeo, sharing clips from his films to illustrate his responses. The floor was then opened to questions from students and staff.
I am so grateful to Adam for the generous offer of his time, thoughtfulness and talent and equally grateful to the audience for their engagement, enthusiasm and energy.
Leah Borromeo, Associate Lecturer, Department of Media, Communications and Cultural Studies
Dr Daisy Asquith, Co-Head of Department, MCCS, said, “Adam Curtis is a thrilling person to have visit us at Goldsmiths, as he is a completely unique voice in journalism and filmmaking and doesn’t reproduce any conventions in his work. His focus on power and using the past to explain the present is the perfect inspiration for students in the precarious political moment we are in.
“He also happens to be a generous, warm and frank person who is willing to answer any question under the sun. Our largest lecture theatre was packed full of excited students and alumni, who were delighted when Adam continued to discuss ideas with them in the bar afterwards.”
