12th February: Christie’s auction to raise funds for Gallery at Goldsmiths

Primary page content

On Thursday 12th February at 1pm, work donated by illustrious alumni, including Antony Gormley, Damien Hirst, Sarah Lucas, Julian Opie, Sam Taylor-Johnson and Steve McQueen, goes under the hammer at Christie’s to raise funds for the Gallery at Goldsmiths.

The artists contributing to the auction represent a ‘Who’s Who’ of British art over the past 30 years and the works they have donated are a reflection of their generosity and of their affection and support for Goldsmiths as a place that educates and nurtures young artists.

The auction will make a significant contribution toward the £2.8 million needed for The Gallery at Goldsmiths project, all of which will be funded by external donations.

A public viewing takes place at Christie’s between 7-11 February. For an online preview of some of the works visit the Christie’s website.

You can also download an electronic version of the Post War and Contemporary Art Day Auction catalogue, which contains further information on our alumni’s donated works and on the Gallery project.

The auction will be available to view online on the 12th February through Christie’s Live.

Christie’s recently worked with three of our current art students to record a series of video interviews ahead of the auction. You can watch and read James Lawrence Slattery’s interview with Fiona Rae, Dave Peel’s interview with Michael Craig-Martin, and Stephanie Gervais' interview with Roger Hiorns on the Christie’s Art Digest pages.

A fantastic teaching resource

The Gallery is set to be a fantastic teaching resource for Goldsmiths students on all programmes that engage with contemporary art, and an asset for the local community. Dr Richard Noble, Head of the Department of Art explains:

“The Gallery will benefit students in many ways. It will bring a world-class exhibitions programme of artists to Goldsmiths. It will have a residency programme that brings artists, curators and scholars to Goldsmiths to do projects, very often involving students. It will create opportunities for students to get involved in films, talks and performances.
The Gallery will become a fantastic teaching resource for programmes that engage in one way or another with contemporary art. It will create opportunities for cross-departmental collaboration in research and teaching that will involve and benefit students.
It will make Goldsmiths an even more interesting and intellectually exciting place to be, while connecting it directly to the London art world.”
