Goldsmiths, University of London’s Department of Design – which was ranked top in the UK by the Guardian in 2015 – has just opened a new state-of-the-art studio for undergraduate students.
“Design studios are mainly for producing design work, and our department has a very strong studio culture,” explains Vinny Esteban, Studio Manager.
“We believe that in order to produce quality design the students need to experience the studio as the place for creation.”
In addition to being a place for making, the new studios have also been designed as an ideal learning environment in which ideas flow, and where students learn from other students.
“It’s important to understand that the process of design does not gives birth in your head, but in an special environment and this is the studio,” adds Vinny. “So we encourage students to spend as much time as they can there."
Final year undergraduate students in the Department of Design will have access to the new studios, which come equipped with television screens for presentations, lectures and projects, an automatic projection screen and speaker system.
The studio is linked to those used by postgraduate students, enabling a creative flow of communication between students at different stages of their degree.
In 2015 the Department of Design was ranked top in the subject league tables that form part of The Guardian’s University Guide. In the same year, Art and Design at Goldsmiths was ranked 12th globally and 4th in the UK by the QS World University Rankings.
