Existing ideas about the global political economy are set for a shake-up as Goldsmiths, University of London launches a new research group aimed at challenging traditional orthodox approaches to the study of economics and society.
As the General Election nears, and the economy remains a key election issue, the Goldsmiths Political Economy Research Centre (PERC) brings together critical thinkers in political science, economics, sociology, anthropology, media and cultural studies to generate new perspectives on contemporary capitalism.
PERC aims to blur the boundaries between economics and other social sciences, while breaking down the barrier between economic experts and the public with a programme of accessible events, blogs and research papers.
Based in the Department of Politics, with affiliations to Sociology and Media, PERC has been established in parallel with the new Politics Philosophy and Economics (PPE) BA degree at Goldsmiths.
This distinctive and critical degree programme offers an innovative perspective to students wanting to study the broader political economy unconstrained by the limits of orthodox thinking.
PERC’s Co-Directors are Dr Will Davies (Politics) and Professor Aeron Davis (Media), with an academic membership drawn from various departments across Goldsmiths, and an Advisory Board of public intellectuals and critical economic thinkers.
What can economics learn from science fiction?
PERC officially launches on Monday 23rd March with celebrated economist and author Professor Ha-Joon Chang delivering the public lecture ‘What can economics learn from science fiction?'
On the 19th and 20th March, all are welcome to attend a challenging and dynamic two-day workshop at Goldsmiths aimed at changing the terms of debate on the so-called UK economic recovery. The event’s outcomes will be published in an e-book, available to download for free from the PERC website after the event.
