In event calendar limbo because Christmas has creeped into the limelight even though we've only just settled into November? We've got you covered.
Live music, open-mic, music in film and one of the UK's biggest music awards - we've got it all and we're spoilt for choice, (there's even free cake on offer at one event). We've done the hard work for you and lined up the best of what Goldsmiths and New Cross has to offer. Here are 7 great things to do this week.
Explore: New Cross as a data tourist
Now’s your chance to find out a little bit more about your surroundings. As part of Radical New Cross: protest and dissent 1875 - 2015,this free 40-minute excursion gives you some hands-on time with a unique device developed by Goldsmiths Interaction Research Studio to explore the data landscape of New Cross. Rock: the microphone at Simon Says
Open-mic night made a return to the SU last month and the next session is not to be missed. Featuring music from BMus Popular Music students, expect a fantasic talent-filled night that'll appeal to all tastes. It's free to attend, and the full set list is up on the Facebook event page.
Stay: connected to your loved one
In a long-distance relationship and missing the company of your partner in the evenings? There’s now a solution, thanks to Design alumna Marion HA Lean, and the rest of the team at Little Riot. The interactive design company has developed Pillow Talk, a device that makes your pillow throb with the sound of your partner’s heartbeat. It’s not available for purchase just yet but Little Riot are crowdfunding to make it possible.
Follow: the action at the Mercury Prize ceremony
This year Goldsmiths alumna, Eska is one of 12 artists shortlisted for the coveted music award, recognised for her debut album ESKA. Watch announcement of this year’s Mercury Prize winner on BBC Four this Friday.
Watch: the musical greats on screen*
There isn't much that beats a free film screening, and that’s exactly what’s on offer this week at the cinema in RHB. Hosted by the Department of Sociology, 20 Feet from Stardom ‘shines the spotlight on the untold stories’ of legendary background singers and features interviews with none other than Bruce Spingsteen, Sting, Mick Jagger, Stevie Wonder and Bette Middler.
Rummage: for vintage goodies
If you’re on a tight budget but have gifts to buy, or perhaps fancy treating yourself guilt-free, head over to the University Vintage Fair on Friday. It’s free to enter and only there for one day, so book your ticket early! Head over to the Facebook event page for all the details.
