Seven things to do this week
With all the excitement of Welcome Week behind us, we hope that you’ve settled into life at Goldsmiths. In this week’s This Is Goldsmiths, we bring you some events to get you fittingly frightened and in the mood for Halloween, and some of the best music New Cross has to offer. Here are seven things you shouldn’t miss this week.
Laugh: about the past at the Halloween History Showoff
Geek meets cabaret at the pub in this showcase of ‘laughs, facts that sound totally made up but aren’t, and loads of terrible PowerPoints.’ What more could you want from a Thursday night? Nine Goldsmiths academics will take you on a journey through the weirder side of history at the Amersham Arms on Thursday. Visit the event page for more information, and book tickets via We Got Tickets.
Enjoy: an entire night of Gold Lounge entertainment
Join Goldsmiths ACS society as they mark Black History Month with everything from live music and spoken word, to comedy and interactive games, (we hear there’ll be Blind Date and a trip to Nando's up for grabs). Check their Facebook and event page for any updates.
Jam: to 20 live musicians at Oxjam Festival
Last weekend, Oxjam ‘the UK’s largest grassroots festival’ took to the streets of New Cross for a day of live music and food stalls. No need to worry if you missed it, this Saturday there’s another chance involved in the fun and do your bit for charity as Oxjam takes over Lewisham.
Read: six of the most innovative novels around
Goldsmiths Prize shortlist has been announced and it’s not long until the winner is announced on 11 November. The six novels will introduce you to styles of writing you’ve probably never read before. Why not pick up a couple of the books and see what the fuss is about? Visit the Goldsmiths Prize website for all of the information.
Experience: the 60 Untold Stories of Black Britain
Goldsmiths’ Centre for Caribbean Studies, 60 Untold Stories of Black Britain presents 60 black and white portraits celebrating the lives of the ‘first black middle-class’. The event runs for the duration of Black History Month.
Visit: local pop 310NXRd
The record shop has returned and we recommend getting over there before they close on the 31st October. With a reputation for some of the best in-store parties in the area, keep an eye on their website and Facebook page for their last event of the season.
Prepare: for Halloween and carve a pumpkin
You’re never too old to carve a pumpkin, so get into the spirit of Halloween with the Goldsmiths Chocolate Society. Entry to the event next Friday includes a pumpkin, an electric candle and use of their pumpkin carving kits. Their Facebook page has all of the details you need.
