This is Goldsmiths: Seven things to do this week
Primary page content
Every day our students, staff and alumni are involved in amazing things.
From live music to lectures, and plays to poetry slams, there are countless ways that you can experience what makes Goldsmiths special and celebrate the achievements of our community, and the excitement of our local area. Here's our pick of seven things to do in the coming week.
See: Kate Tempest in National Portrait Gallery's collection
It's good news for Kate Tempest fans as her latest album is to be featured in National Portrait Gallery's 'Picture the Poet' exhibition. The photograph of the acclaimed poet and spoken word artist, who studied at the Department of English at Goldsmiths, was taken by Dav Stewart for her Mercury Prize nominated album Everybody Down. 'Picture the Poet' is currently on display at The Collection, Lincoln, and will later be touring the country.
Watch: Tate Britain on Sarah Lucas
Goldsmiths alumna Sarah Lucas has been selected for this year's Venice International Art Biennale. Lucas, who graduated from Goldsmiths in 1987, represents Britain in the 56th year of the Biennale. Leading up to the exhibition, which starts on 9 May, Tate Britain explores Lucas' work and career in a #TateShots video.
Visit: St Pancras Church
It's worth paying a visit to the Crypt Gallery in St Pancras Church this weekend for the MAKE / CREATE exhibition featuring Goldsmiths alumna Evy Jokhova. Part of the inaugural London Craft Week, MAKE / CREATE brings together craft scholars and fine artists to collaboratively explore the nature of craft. It closes on Sunday so you've got to be quick!
Hear: All the best music at PureGold
For the fourth year running, our Department of Music's flagship festival PureGold returns to London's Southbank Centre. The launch night includes student acts, special guests, and artists from Goldsmiths’ own independent record label, NX Records, who will be releasing their 2015 mix-tape featuring many of the night’s performers. Taking the Southbank’s popular Friday Night Tonic slot at Festival Village, the PureGold launch night is free and open to all.
Go: To Brighton Fringe Festival
Theatre company Snippet made their debut at the Brighton Fringe festival earlier this month with ‘Known’, a play about how a society reacts to the murder of a young woman. Snippet is a current Entrepreneurs in Residence group at Goldsmiths. Described as 'a poignant, important, and stylistically exquisite performance', it's worth booking tickets for their upcoming performances on 17 and 23 May.

What kind of future to you want to be a part of?MA Digital Media alumna Sophie Uesson is asking this very question by running a hackathon for young creatives at Impact Hub Westminster. The session will see architects, futurists, artists or anyone with an interest in society coming together to discuss the future of work. There's also a chance to win €2500 - sign up here!
Spend: an Evening with Lucian Freud
Second yearBA Fine Artstudent Lily German is the set designer for 'An Evening with Lucian Freud', a play based on a real life encounter with the artist. The play, at Leicester Square Theatre lounge, features only one woman (played by Cressida Bonas) - but with a lot of video cameos! Book here.
