Bernardine Evaristo earned her PhD in Creative Writing from Goldsmiths in 2013. She is the author of many books of fiction and verse fiction that explore aspects of the African diaspora: past, present, lived, travelled, imagined, including Girl, Woman, Other (Penguin, 2019), Mr Loverman (Penguin 2013), Hello Mum (Penguin, 2010), Lara (Bloodaxe 2009), Blonde Roots (Penguin 2008), Soul Tourists (Penguin 2005) and The Emperor’s Babe (Penguin 2001).
She has been on over 80 international tours as a writer giving talks and teaching creative writing, and is Reader in Creative Writing at Brunel University.
Her awards include the 2019 Booker Prize (which she shared with Margaret Atwood), EMMA Best Book Prize, Big Red Read, NESTA Fellowship, Orange Youth Panel Award and Arts Council Writers Award. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and the Royal Society of Arts, and she was made an MBE in 2009.
