I came away with a whole new perspective on life, amazing friendships, a degree and the confidence to venture into new work environments.

Learning from peers

I applied to study the incredible BA Social Science, Community Development & Youth Work course as a (very!) mature student. It was my first time at university, and I loved everything about it.

The very best part of the experience was meeting fellow students on the course - we were a cohort that came from many different countries, backgrounds, cultures and upbringings. The generosity of each student in sharing their life experiences for us all to learn and grow from was a core element of the course. This provided a deeper understanding of the topics we covered.

Knowledgeable tutors

The tutors who ran the course and many of the visiting lecturers were brilliant. They were knowledgeable, had work experience in the fields of study, and provided a safe space for students to learn. Tutors were challenging and provocative when they needed to be (in group work for example).

I really enjoyed doing the coursework, assignments and final dissertation.

Studying as a mature student

This course changed my life in many ways and I highly recommend it. If, like me, you're unsure about studying at an older age, go for it - you won't regret it! I came away with a whole new perspective on life, amazing friendships, a degree and the confidence to venture into new work environments. I even went on to study for a Masters.

Building confidence

As a mature student who'd never been to university, I had zero confidence in my ability to get through the course. I believed that I wasn't academic and not particularly clever. I was very open about my insecurities and received a lot of understanding and support. I quickly realised that I wasn't the only one to feel this way.

Many of us had imposter syndrome, big time! So my advice is, to be honest with yourself and others and to take advantage of all the support on offer.

Life beyond Goldsmiths

I've always been very politically active - passionate about justice and equality, ending prejudice of any kind and wanting to see peace in the world. This course gave me the confidence to stand as a local politician in my area. I was elected as a Councillor in 2018 (during my second year at Goldsmiths) and re-elected in 2022.

Since graduating, I have completed a Masters and gone on to work with young people in both an educational and community setting.
