Audition requirements for MA Acting

Find out more about what to include in your application for our MA Acting programme.

Admission to the MA Acting programme requires passing our two stage process. Stage one requires two successful digital self-tapes of monologues that meet the specific conditions outlined below with an accompanying statement, in addition to your application form and transcripts. If you are successful at stage one, you will then be invited to return for stage two which is an online interview.

Stage one

You are required to sumbit two digital self tapes and a supporting statement. Please follow the below guidance when making your submissions:

Digital self-tapes

Spoken introduction in the two self-tape

Please introduce your full name, the title of the chosen play/performance text, the character you are playing and the writer - all in English.

Time length

Each of the two monologues must be a maximum of two minutes in duration.

Choice of play/performance texts

Both monologues must come from a published play/performance text. One monologue must be from a historical play or performance source and the second a contemporary piece.

You need to select materials that give you the opportunity to work in two different styles/genres of performance and that you are inspired by as an artist.

Historical monologue

This monologue must be from a historical play/performance source from before 1900 and can be from any culture and be in any style/genre, although it must be performed in English.

Contemporary monologue

This monologue must be from a contemporary play/performance source from 1930 onwards and can be from any culture and be in any style or genre, although it must be performed in English.

Memorisation

You need to act from memory.

Sound quality

The sound quality should aim to be as clear as possible, so check your distance from the recording device. Mobile phone footage can often produce quite good results, as do cameras and laptops.

Staging

Please film yourself standing, or sitting, some distance from the camera, so it takes in your full body and allows you space to create a character. You do not need to wear any special costumes.

Technical specifications

Please upload your self-tapes to an easy to access platform such as YouTube, or Vimeo, and provide the password needed for access, if relevant.

These links should be provided in the accompanying statement.

Access issues

Please advise us if there is anything about your video audition format that requires adjustment, so we can consider you on equal grounds to all applicants.

Accompanying statement

You are required to write 250 words about what interested you about each of the two plays, and how you have approached your development of the characters in the monologues. This must be uploaded as either a word document or a PDF with your application.

Stage two

If you are successful at stage one, you will be invited to attend an online interview.

Thank you and we wish you all the best,

MA Acting Team, Goldsmiths College.
