Dual degree between Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Goldsmiths: Virtual & Augmented Reality

The Department of Computing at Goldsmiths, University of London is collaborating with Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) in China to deliver a newly-designed dual degree programme for those interested in exploring study in different contexts internationally. 

You will study the first year at SJTU in China, the second year at Goldsmiths and the remaining time back in China.

What you'll study

At Goldsmiths, you will join MA/MSc Virtual and Augmented Reality programme.

You will engage in a curriculum that emphasises both theoretical knowledge and practical application and explores advanced topics in computing such as AI, virtual reality, and human-computer interaction, taught by academics actively involved in cutting-edge research.

This blend of learning approaches ensures you develop robust problem-solving skills and can apply your knowledge to large, complex challenges. Goldsmiths’ holistic teaching methodology also focuses on the societal impact of computer systems and the ethical implications of your work, ensuring you graduate as a skilled and socially responsible professional.

Furthermore, the programme incorporates modern teaching methods, including gamified learning, to make your educational experience engaging and effective.

You will have the opportunity to interact with industry experts through an advisory panel and networking events, enhancing your professional connections and insights.

Teaching style 

This programme is taught through scheduled learning – for example, through a mixture of lectures, seminars and workshops. You’ll also be expected to undertake a significant amount of independent study. This includes carrying out required and additional reading, preparing topics for discussion, and producing essays or project work.

How you'll be assessed 

You’ll be assessed by a variety of methods, depending on your module choices. These may include coursework assignments such as extended essays, reports, presentations, practice-based projects or essays/logs, group projects and reflective essays, as well as seen and unseen written examinations.

Entry Requirements

To undertake this dual degree programme, you must be studying one of the following degrees at SJTU:

  • Master of Journalism and Communication in Cultural & Creative Industry Management  
  • Master of Fine Arts in Art Management 
  • Master of Digital Cultural Creation and Management 

You will also require an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline with sufficient methodological preparation, as well as being in good standing during your first year at SJTU. 

Once you have completed the first year at SJTU, you will be able to join Goldsmiths to study MA/MSc Virtual and Augmented Reality for the second year. You will return to SJTU for the remainder of your study. 

  

Portfolio requirements

To apply for the MA route, you’ll be required to submit a portfolio of relevant work as part of your application. This can include any form of creative work, ideally using digital tools such as existing VR, AR or games work, but also film production, design work or fine art. To apply for the MSc route, you’re welcome to submit a portfolio to support your application, but this is optional. 

English language requirements

If English isn’t your first language, you will need an IELTS score of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.5 in writing and 6.0 in other components (or equivalent English language qualification) to study this programme. Annual tuition fees 

You will need to pay the relevant tuition fee for the MA/MSc Virtual & Augmented Reality programme, as reviewed and set annually by Goldsmiths. For more information about the tuition fee, please visit  Tuition fee amounts .

Funding opportunities 

You will have the opportunity to receive one of five scholarships offered at £5,000 each for this partnership programme. You do not need to apply for it. All applicants will be considered. 

In addition, we offer a wide range of scholarships and bursaries, and our Careers Service can also offer advice on finding work during your studies.  

Additional costs 

In addition to your tuition fees, you'll be responsible for any additional costs associated with your course, such as buying stationery and paying for photocopying. You can find out more about what you need to budget for on our study costs page
