Moving out of your room

If you reside in Loring Hall, Ewen Henderson Court, Quantum Court, or Town Hall Camberwell, please refer to our moving out instructions.

Primary page content

You should clean your room, bathroom and kitchen carefully, leaving them as you found them and take all your belongings and any rubbish from the room, kitchen and shared areas.

Please ensure you turn off the lights and heating, lock the door behind you, and take all rubbish and recycling to the bin area in your accommodation.

The steps and information below can help you with this process.

Bedroom

  • Place all rubbish in black bags and remove all bags from the building before departure
  • Please see refuse/recycle where possible
  • Make sure you empty and vacuum the under-bed area and/or under-bed storage
  • Wipe clean your windowsills and skirting boards
  • Remove all posters and blue tack from walls or pinboards
  • Vacuum all floors

Bathroom

  • Clean your bathroom, including taps, hand basin, the shower and toilet
  • Remove all limescale
  • Clean the tiles and floors, freeing them from hair, dirt and grime

Kitchens

  • Remove all cooking utensils from your kitchen
  • Empty and clean the fridge and any store cupboards and kitchen drawers need to be emptied and cleaned
  • Do not leave food or any other items in the kitchen

Refuse, recycling and donations

If you have any unopened and non-perishable food items that you would like to donate in the weeks before the main departure date, some of our student accommodation may have a collection point for the local food bank.

Unfortunately, due to limited resources, we are unable to accept other donations. However, we strongly encourage you to recycle as much as possible. If you have any items you would like to donate, there are lots of charity shops in Lewisham that accept good-quality items.

You can find out more on the Lewisham website. Tower Hamlets (for Quantum Court) and Southwark (Town Hall Camberwell) also offer information.

You cannot generally donate or recycle bedding, duvets, and pillows, so you will need to dispose of them in black bin bags in the general waste bins.

Rubbish and recycling should be taken to the bin area in your accommodation and removed from your building.

Please ensure you do not leave anything behind in your room or flat.

If you leave valuables behind

If any valuable items are found in your room after the end of the contract, the housekeeping team will arrange for to these to be removed from the room and stored for a maximum of 28 days from the end date in your original agreement. You will be responsible for the cost of removing and storing your belongings and disposing of any other items left behind.

Items left in the kitchen or communal areas of the flat cannot be attributed to a single resident and will be disposed of.

Your key and/or key card

Please hand over your key or key card to a member of staff in at reception. If your card has been lost, there will be a charge, and if your key has been lost, we may need to arrange for the lock to be changed and relevant charges will be added to your account. Do not return your student ID card to us.

Mail and packages

We recommend you update your address on Student Records and any other account you may have and ensure you check at reception for any post before you leave your accommodation, as your student accommodation and Royal Mail are not able to redirect mail.

If you are away and unable to collect your belongings

If you want to arrange for a flatmate, friend or relative to vacate your room, you must email Accommodation Services to confirm their details (full name and contact number). If they are a student, they will need to bring their student ID.

Alternatively, they will need to bring proof of ID. This also applies if they are not a student. Please send this information to accommodation (@gold.ac.uk) from your Goldsmiths email account, including your room number, preferred check-out date and time and allow 3-5 days for a response.

If your friends and family are unable to assist you with collecting your belongings, there are a number of providers offering this type of service. Whilst many of our students over the years have used LOVESPACE, we do not endorse a specific provider.

Please bear in mind you will need to book and pay for this type of service at least one or two weeks before your departure and ensure you or a friend are here to meet the courier on the day of the removal or collection.

Please note we cannot facilitate access outside our office hours and any collections need to be pre-arranged. We also have no space to hold boxes for you at reception and we cannot accept responsibility for collections from third parties or removal companies.

If you have recently vacated your room

If you have recently vacated your room, your room will continue to remain available to you until the end date in your contract.

If you need to return your key and key card, please post the key together with your name and student number to your accommodation and contact us to let us know. Do not post your student ID card and do not include your room number.
