Patrick Wallace studied abroad at Goldsmiths in spring 2016. He is now enrolled in a graduate programme to become a psychotherapist by earning two simultaneous master’s degrees. He spoke to us about his experience at Goldsmiths and how his time abroad in London influenced his career.

How was your experience studying abroad at Goldsmiths?

My experience was incredible! The classes were interesting and a lot of fun. The professors stimulated great dialogue with students and encouraged us to “think outside the box.” The classes were very insightful and I greatly enjoyed my experience at Goldsmiths. I cannot wait to come back and visit!

What skills did you gain by studying abroad at Goldsmiths and in London?

I improved my communication, critical reading and writing, research, and writing skills.

How did your international experience help you in your job search?

Experiencing, talking with, and meeting multiple people from around the world enforced the idea that I enjoyed listening to and talking with others – which aided in my decision to pursue psychotherapy.

How did the skills you developed through your international experience help you in your workplace?

My experience allowed me to gain new multicultural skills needed to efficiently counsel people from different cultures or backgrounds that were different from my own (in my future profession).

In what other ways did your time abroad help you to develop?

It allowed me to become more independent, as I lived on my own in a different country for a semester. The time away also allowed me to develop my personal character and observe problems from a different perspective.

What advice would you give to a student considering applying to study abroad?

I would tell the student to take the opportunity because it a great learning experience and they will not regret it. In some instances, they will gain life skills they could apply to many areas in their life. The classes are interesting, you will learn a lot, the staff and students are friendly, and you can explore the city of London.
