Paula Karvonen's background is in product design. She is interested in human expertise and its representation in relation to social and cultural acts and significations.

Facets of research towards final project spurred from investigation towards forms of communication and ritual engaged with notions across such themes as time, expression, routine and information and their representation in a form of a domestic usable / domestic rug / ritual object aiming to cause release and momentary pleasure.  

Other areas of interest include the human footprint; technology; smart materials; crafts; urban-domestic environment; environment design; responsibility; and identity. Her current practice is formed of mixed disciplines across conceptual design.
